This year, for the first time in a long time the house floor was opened for amendments to the Federal Budget, according to a Wall Street Journal article.
In a step toward greater democracy that Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi never would have allowed, Speaker of the House Boehner allowed members of the house to offer amendments to the massive federal budget. As the article reports, over 600 amendments flooded into the bill cutting programs left and right, including a program that was near and dear to the Speaker’s heart, the F-35 second engine project. Yet, in spite of the chaos and the conflicts with personal interest, Speaker Boehner allowed the amendments to be voted on, thus allowing a greater level of democracy in the House than we have seen in a while.
Hopefully this is only the beginning of the open government Republicans promised us last November.
